"Best App for Handwritten Notes" - OReilly Best iPhone Apps

"Using Dan Bricklin’s Note Taker is a beautiful experience, as the app is a brilliant workaround to a formerly sticky situation. More important, it works like a charm." - John Fuller, Macworld.com (writing about version 1.0 . . . and version 2.0 is even better!)

Dan Bricklins® Note Taker makes it easy for you to quickly write down and organize names, phone numbers, addresses, shopping lists, notes, and more. You write directly on the screen with your finger. Its like having a stack of note cards and a pencil always with you.

Pages are flexibly organized by date/time last modified, tags, favorites, and more, with thumbnail images of part of each page to help you find them later.

You can write in large letters on the screen rather than trying to make tiny motions like a pencil. Note Taker automatically shrinks your writing so you can fit a lot of text on the screen. You just keep writing and Note Taker automatically adds new writing next to the old. To quickly correct mistakes, it has a multi-level undo button as well as an eraser -- just drag your finger over the page to erase the "ink" under it.

The "paper" your writing ends up on is equivalent to about a 3"x5" card. You can write anywhere on it, so you can cross out shopping items as you buy them, go back and underline, draw diagrams, and more. You lay out the page the way you want. Use any markings: stars, underlines, and characters in any language. Create multiple pages.

You can email your notes as JPEGs, or save them to a photo album.

With this full version, you can email multiple pages as a PDF. You can also create "Typed" pages with the keyboard and organize them with the ink pages. On ink pages you can bring up a keyboard later to transcribe what you wrote into contact information that can be added to the Address Book with the tap of a button or pasted into other apps. This full version does not have a limit on the number of pages and does not have a watermark on the JPEGs.

Note Taker was designed and programmed by Dan Bricklin, the same person who 30 years ago came up with VisiCalc, the pioneering electronic spreadsheet that made working with numbers on a personal computer so easy.

See the Note Taker YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/DBNoteTaker -- MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE "How to write on the screen" video or follow the "Try It" tutorial in the app itself to learn the "trick" to writing.

Pros and cons of Note Taker app for iPhone and iPad

Note Taker app good for

Excellent note taking app if you are not very good with the touch keyboard. Well worth the price. Would like to see actual handwritting recognition then it would be perfect.
I bought my first Apple II to get Visicalc. If I hadnt already had had iPhone in fist simply seeing this app would be enough to make buy one. Simple. Focused. Useful. ---> productivity defined.
Performs as stated: i have often felt I wished the iPhone had a note taking app like this - though it does make me wish I had a stylus.
I really like this app. I have been using it a bunch. I often write notes late at night and this app does great. I switch it to night mode which makes it easy on my eyes. Its fast and easy to use. I often send notes right to my email at work from my bed. Best tutorial I have seen in an app too. Great work. Wish List: 1) a cut/copy and paste tool: drag a box or cut out irregular shapes to cut, copy and paste within a note 2) notes being more than one page long 3) auto advance when you get to the end of a line (like the app use your handwriting - by geewhiz) instead of the current way it works. Get it - support the people who make our lives fun and easier.
Simple, reliable, love it. Wish there was an exact version for the iPad.
A great way to hand write effectively on a small screen. It takes 30 seconds to understand the interface, watch the video or read the instructions. Use it all the time.

Some bad moments

(UPDATE - reason for 5 star to 1 star downgrade) Owned this app for over one year and few (if any) updates occurred. This app is getting old and is no longer as useful as newer apps. It is still a great idea but it needs new features such as: - iPhone 5 screen support - google docs sync - time stamped notes - character recognition - other editing functions to compete with full text editors - read and write standard doc formats like docx, rtf, etc. Original review: Finally, handwriting is possible on the iPhone et al! Thats to another innovation from a computer pioneer! I was surprised to see this app but I instantly knew it would be exceptional. As with any of Dans prior work, this is an app of beauty with probably more features than most will use. But that is a PLUS in my books! Well worth it and a treat to use! One suggestion to consider... Please think about adding in time stamped/synced with text notes audio/camera recording capability. That feature would definitely complete the app. As always, excellent work!
This app is a total crap. Unusable on iPhone ugly and totally useless. A shame on the fame of its author. Crap and wasted money. Stay away forever from this!
Dont like it. Awkward to use and not worth the money. I am deleting it.
Why is the drawing so laggy on the iPhone 4? You seem to be having trouble optimizing for the A4 since the iPad version shows similar problems recording smooth pen strokes. Disappointing.
This is the most amateur and pointless app i have ever downloaded. The line strokes are slow and laggy even though I have an iPhone 3GS. The user interface is really complicated, and the description is very misleading. There are free apps out there that do a far better job than this.
I read a lot of the reviews of this app before I purchased. I am not sure what all the people are calling great about this app. It is horrible!
